What Do You Have That Money Can’t Buy?

Hint: it’s mentioned about five lines down.

This week brings us one of the best days of the year.  Sure, Thanksgiving is filled with great food, fun, and familial reconnection (or drama).  But, for many of us, nothing tops Black Friday.  The thrill of planning what to purchase, what time to get in line, synchronized online shopping carts, and the sheer adrenaline rush achieved from snagging the bargain of the century.

If any, these two late November dates provide great fodder for a good story.  I bet it wouldn’t take you long to think about a funny (or embarrassing) experience from past years. So this week, since we’re playing hooky from the #ThursdayGathering in favour of Thanksgiving, we’re exploring the art of storytelling. (And likely not in the way you might think).

Instead of offering thoughts on the typical mechanics of a good story,  instead, we’re wondering how might we draw out more meaningful stories– the kind that better connects us with others.

People often ask why the VCM name tags just list one’s name and a number.  Well, in part, it’s because there’s more to you than what you do.  We believe to be defined exclusively by where you work or the position you hold diminishes the opportunity to self-define the narrative of who you are.  When designing spaces to build human connection, it’s important to keep in mind that each of us has a story and the best person to tell it is you!

If you don’t know where to start, take a page out of Simon Sinek’s book and Start With Why or Michelle Obama’s latest, on Becoming who you are today– what are you passionate about? What do you do for fun? What issues do you care about? What makes you smile?

So the next time you put on one of those  super-awkward-name tags, attend a “networking” function, or even sit down at dinner with new folks (like Thanksgiving or Friendsgiving), consider how will you tell your story?

Remember: own the narrative, or it will own you.
