Who doesn’t love a good hype man, or woman? (because gender equality is paramount).  What an awesome job it must be to provide continuous encouragement, elevate excitement, and generally ensure that folks are having a good time.  Indeed, social  media, rankings and pitch-style talent shows elevate relevance over reality.

We often speak of South Florida with aspiration, as if it is the hub for innovation that we all know it will soon be.

How can we avoid the trap of confusing hyperbole with hype?

There’s nothing wrong with a little hype over what makes our startup community cool.  The list is endless . . .

Yet, if we buy into a narrative framed by embellishment, exaggeration, and claims that were never meant to be taken literally, we impede legitimate efforts to tell an authentic story of Miami’s innovation growing scene.

For instance, who would have thought that since its 2016 launch, VCM’s #ThursdayGathering , would draw over 40,000+ South Floridian interested in the entrepreneurship and innovation? And by innovation, we actually mean innovation, as represented by dozens and dozens of educational sessions and activations that had nothing to do with the parties or the beach.

So, we’re ask you this week we’re asking for you to report back — email, comment, shout us out on social, or even better, let us know in person at the #ThursdayGathering!

  1. Where do you find reliable stats on startups, innovation, tech and business growth? We’re not talking about vanity metrics meant to shed a never-ending positive lights, but rather, the honest evaluations on our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges.
  2. How do you find the #startupstories that inspire? We’re looking for high growth companies that fly below the radar, with their heads down building traction and persistent at scaling.
  3. Miami is known for trendsetting. But, we’re curious about what new trends present investment opportunities within (or beyond) our traditional target industries of aviation, banking and finance, creative design, hospitality and tourism, technology, life sciences and healthcare, and trade and logistics.
  4. Traffic along all the major corridors isn’t the only headache our community faces. What are the major roadblocks that limit business growth?
  5. Asking for help is becoming increasingly less taboo. Many of us are familiar with the go-to mentors whose advice, Roladex and time hold equal value. Who do you ask for help? Why?
  6. Similarly, if we knew everything there was to know about connecting our ventures with the right opportunities and capital sources, we would be drowning in unicorns. The reality is, we’re not. What resources do you tap to improve your skills or to enhance your operational capacity?

The energy surrounding movements to build communities that matter is contagious. And it’s easy to get caught in the hype(rbole). If we are to elevate our regional ranking as a viable innovation cluster, we must crowdsourcing the roadmap.

Be eager to embrace the hype, but at the same time, let’s be real.
