Mundane.

Not a word we typically associate with innovation or startup activity, but stay with us. There’s a connection here.

Competing definitions of mundane refer either to the practicality and commonplace nature of daily life, or the uninteresting– strongly characterized as boring.

By no means, is this a call for greater mediocrity or the creation of uninspired widgets that offer no discernible value to the world.

Rather, in a world where shiny objects, explosive growth, and a growing preoccupation with excess rules, many tend to overlook the importance of the mundane.

So, what’s the relevance?

The tools upon which rely like Slack, Trello, email, word processors, fitness trackers, Duolingo (foreign language learning app)–to name a few–have quickly become indispensable to our daily lives. Both in terms of efficacy and enjoyment. As a society, we cleave to things that make our lives easier. But most, though not all, innovation is rooted in practicality. At least the inventions that generate revenue, that is. Thus, there’s value in examining the mundane; it pushes us to find insight and patterns that are not obvious.

Similarly, amidst the overstimulation of our senses through traditional and social media, forced contemplation of the routine naturally compels discipline. (Let’s be honest, how many times have you checked Facebook, Instagram or your favorite news app in the last 10 minutes ??). Putting aside the dopamine spikes linked to social media, the predictability of mundane activities like a daily walk, journalling, or other healthy habits may minimize rising stress levels associated with our attention-deficit ridden culture.

And, sometimes, the rote creates space for reflection. What do I mean by that? The mundane activities in which we engage as if by auto-pilot literally free up brain space. (disclaimer: not a scientifically proven fact . . .) The question is: where and how do you redirect the extra capacity?

For our friends up north, summer days are full to the brim with activities, exciting outdoor adventures and excursions of the type only made possible by the soaring temperatures. But here, summer is marked by a slower pace. So this week, let’s take note of the unnoticeable, those mundane moments that pass us by day in and day. You never know, they may leave you inspired.

Cheers,
