This talk will introduce the background and context of the historic night of February 25, 1964, during which the play (One Night in Miami…) occurred and what it meant for Miami to be its host during the rise of the Civil Rights Movement. Carl Cofield, Kieron Anthony, and Michel Hausmann will also discuss being Miamians at different stages in their lives and their relationships to and with the City as theatermakers.

-Kieron J. Anthony, actor (playing Cassius Clay)
-Carl Cofield, Associate Artistic Director, Classical Theatre of Harlem
-Michel Hausmann, Artistic Director, Miami New Drama
-moderator: Lance Dixon, The New Tropic

About the play: On February 25th, 1964, a young Cassius Clay emerges from the Miami Beach Convention Center as the World Heavyweight Boxing Champion. Unable to stay on the island, he celebrates at the Hampton House Motel with his friends: activist Malcolm X, singer Sam Cooke, and football icon Jim Brown. As the Civil Rights Movement stirs outside, and the melody of “A Change is Gonna Come” hangs in the air, the four men set out to change the world. Written by Kemp Powers. Directed by Carl Cofield.
