Are You Ready For Your Performance Review?

It’s that time of year.  Not only has disappearing humidity signaled that we have officially entered the season for which most Miamians live here.   But, most organizations have embarked upon 2019 planning and the dreaded performance review.

Reviews, despite being anxiety inducing and a common trigger of PTSD , when executed thoughtfully and with compassion, offer an accurate barometer of where we can level up.  Your job is to discover how to level up.

So this week, we’re wondering what does your business or idea need to get to the next level?

Quite frankly, that’s somewhat of a trick question.  There is no one-size-fits all plan.  Rather, the strategy for growth is about more than increasing numbers or other metrics.  It is, in large part, an exercise in mindset shift.  So here’s where we landed on the QOTD:

Grade Report:  if you had to grade your performance would you get and A for “effort” or an A for “achievement?  While you should not underestimate the importance of attitude, desire and mental fortitude, results don’t appear out of thin air.  If you are a master of mediocracy, try elevating your performance by focusing instead on realizing outputs  that are both tangible and measurable.

#Fail(ish):  Your track record will only carry you so far.  At some point you’ll need to demonstrate present abilities to take your idea or venture the next stage.  Are there areas where you struggle to meet your goals or external expectations?  What behaviors, bad habits or knowledge deficiencies contribute to this outcome?  We are less likely to put our failures under a microscope but that practice is key to continuously leveling up.  A keen understanding of your strengths and weakness will allow you to develop a game plan for change .

Adjust the Scope: If insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over, yet expecting a different result, why then do we rely upon the safe and familiar for advice? Stop letting pedigree, position, and popularity be your go-to.  Perhaps your subject matter expert — the one that has deepest level of experience with your most troublesome pain points is sitting right before your eyes.

Cheers,
